"Hells no!" --George Washington

I wish sites like BrainyQuote and ThinkExist would disappear. Then I wouldn't have to tackle stuff like this:
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us,” Ralph Waldo Emerson famously claimed.

And the corresponding endnote:
000 "What lies behind us": widely attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, although the original source is unclear.
Um, unclear? Unclear to whom? The morons who compile quote clearinghouses? The query I decided on does not adequately reflect my scorn.

AU: Only properly vetted quotations may be used. In doing the research, one discovers that this quote was definitely not Emerson: http://quoteinvestigator.com/2011/01/11/what-lies-within/
Please recast both the main text and the note.

  2. Happy New Year.

I was re-reading some of your earlier work - Tornado Norm, Grams, the block tower. You're good.

I called you on 9/11, just after the first tower was hit; thankfully, you were alright. Or maybe I'm mis-remembering. Maybe I never called after all.

Or maybe you just didn't pick up.

  3. And happy New Year to you, Anonymous.

We obviously know each other from way back, but the Anonymous angle means I don't know whether to say (a) Thanks for thinking of me then, and thanks for the compliments or (b) Go eat flies, you creeper. I have few enemies, so I'm going to go with the former.

In the right-hand column under What Is a Copyeditor, you'll find an e-mail addy for me. I check it rarely, but feel free to drop me a line.

Would you be so kind as to also tell me what your Word Verification word is when you comment? Creating a funny definition for it is a bonus. Love, Your Copyeditor.
